Lee, interesting as always. Here's what popped (excuse the bubble joke) into my mind. 1. Is the bubble flexible and can it expand or contract. 2. What if, instead of a bubble, I conjured up a walled fortress. New information can come it because I open the gates or new information can come in because something breaks the gate down from the outside.

First let me say that I’m basing this on my current understanding of cognitive science.

The bubble is not a barrier like a wall. It’s more like an interface with “true” reality that’s based on what our senses experience. It has both limits and the potential to grow and change. Limits include things that we can’t sense: magnetic fields, ultraviolet light, etc. By simply being human, our bubble is limited.

However, our experience inside the bubble can change. The information that comes into the bubble is evaluated and filtered. As we learn and experience the world, our bubbles (the experience of reality) start to reflect what gets our attention and what has meaning. Our brains change according to our perceptions and experiences. You could say that this increases the surface area of the inside of the bubble. The more you know and understand, the more gets in.

I see what you mean about the fortress, but that framing makes it seem more of a conscious effort than it is. Our experience inside the bubble looks like everyday reality to us and that comes with less conscious control. We dont necessarily decide what’s in or out.
